I am a certified public educator with a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Texas State University - San Marcos, but I have chosen, however, to focus on my piping and making the bagpipe an important part of north and central Texas. I am presently a member of the Celtic rock band The Killdares. In addition to piping, I am also interested inhealth and fitness; I find that keeping my mind and body in shape helps keep my piping at its best.
My love for the bagpipe started at a young age, but my parents thought it was just a passing fad. This dream did not become a reality until 1996 when my folks bought me a set of highland bagpipes for my graduation. Little did I know that you do not learn to play the highland pipes on a bagpipe! In 2000, I joined the Silver Thistle Pipes & Drums and received advanced instruction from Pipe Major Kenneth Liechti, who was trained by some of the greatest pipers of the last century. From here I started competing with the band, both locally and internationally. In the summer of 2001, Silver Thistle traveled to Scotland where we competed at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow. That same year, I founded Mattpiper Bagpiping, which has grown and thrived to become my full-time job. I feel truly blessed to be able to share my love of the bagpipe with my students, state of Texas, and beyond. In 2005, I began learning the Irish uilleann pipes, and in in 2006 I began offering my services as both a highland and uilleann bagpiper to the community. In the summer of 2004, I joined the Celtic rock band The Killdares and now find myself touring the United States, which has broadened the reach of Mattpiper Bagpiping. |
